Spanish fruit and veg exports to EU on a downward trend

 

The volume of fresh fruits and vegetables exported by Spain to the EU, a market that accounts for 91% of Spanish sales, declined 6% year-on-year until August, totaling 6.4 million tons. Meanwhile, exports to destinations outside the EU dropped by 14%, amounting to 1.2 million tons, according to statistics from the Department of Customs and Special Taxes of the Tax Agency.

In contrast, the value of Spanish fresh fruit and vegetable exports increased by 8% to the 27 EU member states, reaching a total of 9.544 million euros. Exports to non-EU markets saw a 1% growth, totaling 2.147 million euros.

Germany and France remained the top destinations for Spanish exports from January to August 2023, with 1.9 million tons exported to Germany, a 2% decrease from the same period in 2022, and 1.2 million tons to France, a 7% decrease.

The revenue generated by these exports increased by 13% in the German market, reaching 3.184 million euros, and by 5% in the French market, with 1.779 million euros.

The United Kingdom is the primary extracommunity destination for Spanish fruits and vegetables, with 861,816 tons exported, a 12% decrease in quantity, but with a value of 1.4 million euros, representing a 1% decrease.

Beyond Europe, prominent destinations such as Brazil and Canada experienced declines. Sales to Brazil amounted to 19,985 tons, a 9% decrease in quantity, while the value increased by 3% to a total of 26.3 million euros. Exports to Canada reached 18,297 tons, a 55% decrease in quantity, with a value of 28.9 million euros, representing a 34% decrease.
