Spain 16/10/2023
During the first seven months of 2023, there's been a significant change in Spanish fresh fruit and vegetable exports to countries outside of Europe.
A drop of 35% has been observed in the amount of produce, with only 169,735 tons compared to the same period in 2022. The decrease in value was 17%, totaling 246.9 million euros, according to data from the Department of Customs and Special Taxes.
When we look at the data up to July, we see a decrease in the sales of Spanish fruits and vegetables in key non-European markets. Notably, exports to Brazil decreased by 9%, totaling 19,985 tons, while Canada experienced a substantial 55% decrease to 18,297 tons. The United States also saw a 13% reduction to 12,626 tons.
This means that non-European countries now make up only 2% of Spain's total export volume, down from 3% last year and 4% five years ago.
Despite the decrease in the amount of produce, the total value of horticultural and fruit exports in the analyzed period increased by 8%, reaching a significant 10.88 billion euros.
