Chile exports less fresh fruit

Between January and August 2023, Chile exported a total of 2 million 541 thousand tonnes of fruit, with a value of USD 5,973 million, according to the recent ODEPA report, corresponding to this September. Compared to the same period in 2022, these figures show a 6% decrease in volume, but an 8.8% increase in value.
 
Of this total value, 73.8% corresponds to fresh fruit, 17.9% to processed fruit (juices, oils, preserves, frozen, dehydrated) and 8.2% to nuts (walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, among others).
 
Exports of fresh fruit amounted to 2 million tonnes, equivalent to a value of USD 4,411 million during the period analysed. These exports have experienced a decrease of 7.7% in volume, but an increase of 10.3% in value compared to the same period of the previous year.
 
Within the fresh fruit group, cherries have stood out as the main exported species, registering a volume of 302,790 tonnes and a value of USD 1,820 million, representing 41.3% of the total value of fresh fruit exports in the period. A 6% increase in volume and a 22% increase in value has been observed in cherry shipments compared to the same period in 2022. The main destination was China, which accounted for 91% of the value of Chilean cherry exports.
 
In second place is table grapes, with a volume of 495,308 tonnes for USD 847.1 million. There has been a decrease of 18% in the volume exported and a decrease of 1.7% in value, while the main buyers in this period have been the United States (47%) and China (12%).
 
In third place is apple, with shipments of 419,000 tonnes for USD 430.4 million. Despite a decrease of 15.8% in volume, it has increased by 2.4% in value compared to the same period last year. The main destinations were the United States (15.7% of the total value of apple shipments), followed by Colombia (12.2%), Brazil (9.1%), Taiwan (7%) and Ecuador (6.6%). 
 
In fourth place is the blueberry, with shipments of 72,242 tonnes and a value of USD 317.6 million. There has been a 20% decrease in volume and a 10.5% decrease in value compared to the same period last year, with the main destinations being the United States (49.6%) and the Netherlands (19.9%).
