Downward spiral for the price of avocados in Australia

Printable version
Avocado lovers in Australia are celebrating. Retail prices are continuing to fall, as a result of a growing increase in domestic production.

Australian media are reporting that the retail price of avocados in some shops has fallen to just 9 AUS cents (USD 0.058) for 1 fruit and 99 AUS cents (USD 0.63) for 1 kg.

The price of avocados fluctuates according to quality, size, type of packaging and, above all, supply and demand. At present, the collapse in prices can be explained mainly by an oversupply of avocados.

Over the past decade, Australian farmers have increased the number of avocado crops they grow, and production has soared. According to Avocados Australia, more than 122,197 tonnes of avocados were produced in the 2021/22 season (up 56% on the previous season). Australian production will continue to rise, with 170,000 tonnes of avocados expected per year by 2026.
