Morocco remains primary fruit and veg supplier to Spain

 

During the first semester of 2023, a 68% share of Spain's fresh fruit and vegetable imports was attributed to non-European Union countries, amounting to a total value of €1.606 billion. This figure marks an 18% increase compared to the equivalent period in 2022. The remaining 32% of imports were sourced from within the EU, contributing a total of €745 million, signifying a 38% surge when contrasted with the preceding period, according to data from the Customs and Special Taxes Department.

In absolute terms, Morocco retained its position as Spain's primary supplier within the first semester of the current year, with imports of fresh fruits and vegetables totaling €603.2 million. This, however, represented an 8% decline in comparison to the same term in 2022. Peru was the second-largest supplier, registering €246 million—a 39% growth compared to the same period last year. Costa Rica followed, with imports worth €130.5 million, showcasing a 26% growth.

Within the EU countries, France represented a 45% growth in fruit and vegetable imports to Spain, totaling €233 million and consolidating as the premier EU supplier. Portugal followed with €154.7 million, reflecting a 30% rise. The Netherlands contributed €126.6 million (+35%), while Italy's imports stood at €102.9 million, an increase of 45%. Collectively, Spanish imports of fresh fruits and vegetables totaled €2.351 billion in the initial half of the year, marking a 24% upsurge compared to the corresponding months in 2022.
