Positive forecast for Spanish almond production

Printable version

Almond production in Spain is projected to reach 120,633 tons in the 2023 campaign, according to the latest estimate from the national table of nuts. This estimate is 49% higher than the average of the past three years, primarily attributed to the addition of over 16,000 new hectares of almond production.

The total productive area for this year is reported to be 538,353 hectares, reflecting a 3.1% increase compared to the previous year. The new hectares are predominantly irrigated and located in regions of Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, and Andalusia. These additional irrigated areas have helped mitigate the adverse effects of current unfavorable weather conditions and the prolonged drought in the main almond-producing regions, particularly impacting rainfed plantations.

Organic almond production covers more than 100,000 hectares, accounting for nearly 20% of the total area.

Worth to mention that the previous year witnessed a record decline in the harvest due to severe weather conditions in the production areas.
