Spanish fruit and veg imports continue to rise

The value of Spanish imports of fruit and vegetables from January to April 2023 increased by 25% compared to the corresponding period in the previous year, reaching a total of 1,556 million euros, according to data from the Customs and Excise Department. Among these imports, fruit accounted for 1,099 million euros, reflecting an increase of 22%, while vegetables amounted to 546 million euros, representing a rise of 30%.

During the initial four months of the year, almost all imported fruits demonstrated an upward trend in value. Avocados reached the highest value and growth rate of the period, amounting to 141.5 million euros, a 75.5% increase from the same period in the previous year.

In terms of vegetables, the majority of imports were attributed to potatoes, accounting for a value of 218 million euros. This means a growth of 57% compared to the same period in 2022. Potatoes represented 40% of the total value of vegetable imports and 22% of the overall imports in the sector.

Volume of imports amounted to 1.47 million tons, indicating an increase of 17% compared to the same period in 2022. Vegetable import volume rose by 13%, totaling 771,235 tons, while those of fruit increased by 21%, amounting to 704,486 tons.
