Senegal expects better mango crop this year

Printable version
Senegal's annual mango production is estimated at around 18 million tonnes. The volume exported in 2022 recorded a variation of -33.3% compared with 2021.

According to the local media, a meeting was recently held between the country's mango industry players. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the sector's various problems, and in particular the structures needed to develop cultivation and marketing.

In 2021, the country exported 24,000 tonnes of mangoes, but only 16,000 tonnes in 2022, according to Zahra Iyane Thiam, Managing Director of Asepex (Agence sénégalaise de promotion des exportations). This represents a variation of -33.3%, due to climatic phenomena that had caused a significant delay in flowering and favored the proliferation of fruit flies.

This year, sustained efforts to combat the fruit fly and good weather conditions at flowering mean that we can expect a much better campaign in terms of volume produced and volume exported.
