Japan to increase imports of Colombian Hass avocados

Printable version

At the end of May, the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) received an audit from the Japanese health authorities.

The visit was made by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) of Japan. The purpose was to obtain approval for 157 farms in the departments of Antioquia, Risaralda, Cauca, Huila, Quindío and Valle del Cauca.

The visit focused on the verification of the Operational Work Plan (OWP), agreed between the health authorities of both countries and approved in 2019. Thanks to this plan, more than 470 tons of Hass avocado have been exported to Japan, according to Colombian media.

During the audit, production areas and packing plants in Sonsón (Antioquia) and Guática (Risaralda) were inspected, where the phytosanitary strategies used by the ICA, production sites and packing plants to export the Hass variety were validated. These strategies guarantee that the exported fruits are not overripe or overripe and maintain their phytosanitary integrity.

Shutaro Sumi, Maff's inspector, emphasized that thanks to the efforts of Colombian producers, the Japanese can now eat fresh and delicious avocados.
