Pepper season in Mendoza is in full swing

 

The provinces of Jujuy and Corrientes are significant producers of peppers for canning and fresh consumption, and so are Tucumán, Mendoza, and Buenos Aires. Meanwhile, in Salta and Catamarca, there is a strong focus on the production of paprika.

In Mendoza, the main producing departments are Maipú, Lujan, San Carlos, Junín, San Rafael, and Lavalle. The majority of the peppers cultivated in the province belong to the Calahorra variety, which is intended for the canning industry. The province also grows four-horned peppers for the fresh market and the dehydrated food industry.

Based on the data from the RUT (Registro Único de la Tierra), the main producer in Mendoza is Maipú, with 137 ha, followed by Luján with 114 ha, Junín with 76 ha, and Lavalle with 52 ha. San Carlos follows with 46 ha, San Rafael with 43 ha, Alvear with 38 ha, Guaymallén with 30 ha, and Tunuyán with 10 ha, among others.

These days, Mendoza’s farmers offer their produce directly through virtual purchasing platforms.

One kilo of four-horned green peppers is priced at 400 pesos ($1.9) at the Facebook Marketplace. At the same time, freshly harvested green peppers are advertised for 1,500 pesos ($7.11) per crate in Rama Caída.

Furthermore, red peppers which are considered of the highest quality are priced at 700 pesos ($3.32) and the second-grade ones at 350 pesos ($1.66).
