Morocco suspends exports of certain vegetables

Printable version
To combat soaring prices on the domestic market, Morocco suspends exports of certain vegetables

According to local media, Morocco Fodex, the export control authority for agricultural products, has banned exports of tomatoes, onions and potatoes to West African countries. The ban took effect on February 9.

The Moroccan agricultural sector is experiencing some difficulties with the effects of a severe drought in 2022 and then the cold spell this winter which reduced production and pushed up the prices of basic products. The price of tomatoes doubled in 1 month. In addition, the month of Ramadan, where the demand for food products is particularly strong, will start at the beginning of April.

On the export side, Moroccan agricultural products are mainly destined for European countries, but trade has progressed with African countries. Especially with West Africa which is now the main African market for Moroccan agri-food products.
