Nigeria wants to exploit the export potential of mangoes

Printable version

Nigeria is the world's 10th largest producer of mangoes, with an annual production of around 800,000 tons. The volumes exported are low, but the country wishes to increase and improve its production in order to develop and diversify its export markets.

Of the 8 mango varieties found in Nigeria, the most common is the Ogbomosho/Enugu variety. But foreign markets prefer the Kent and Keitt varieties which are not widespread in the country. The continued increase in demand, particularly in Europe, is an opportunity for Nigeria to increase its production and develop its export markets.

According to Dr. Olufemi Oladunni, Director General of ARMTI (Agricultural and Rural Management Training Institute) it is necessary to work with the mango varieties demanded by the export markets, to multiply the production of seedlings to extend the plantations. Then, implement strict procedures for production and quality control in order to export high quality mangoes to the international market.

Deploying the improved varieties, increasing production, cultivating more organic mangoes to obtain high prices on the international market are the main factors that will significantly increase export earnings, according to Dr. Victor Iyama, President of FACAN (Federation of Agricultural Commodity Associations of Nigeria).

"The export potential of mango has not been fully exploited" according to Alhaji Abdulkadir Nasir, president of NAMPPMAN (National Association of Mango Producers, Processors and Marketers of Nigeria) which has been encouraging Nigerian producers for several months to develop the crops. and increasing processing activities, such as the production of mango juice, to increase incomes.
