East Africa aims to double its exports of Fruits & Vegetables

EAC (East African Community) is a regional intergovernmental organization made up of 6 partner states: the republics of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, the United Republic of Tanzania and the Republic of Uganda.
 
Recently, a strategic plan was unveiled to double EAC's fruit and vegetable exports over the next 8 years, with a target of USD 900 million.
 
To achieve this, the EAC plans to increase the area of fruit production by 5% to 10 million hectares and also to increase the area of vegetable production by 5% from 32.8 million to hectares to 45 million hectares.
 
But also to increase investment and strengthen cooperation in the R&D sector and the product packaging sector as well as export infrastructure, market access and trade policy coordination.
 
In addition to exports to the rest of the world, trade between EAC member countries will increase from USD 9.9 million currently to USD 25 million by 2031.
 
EAC produces a wide range of fruits and vegetables that can be exported to regional and international markets, according to Christopher Bazivamo, EAC Deputy Secretary General in charge of Productive and Social Sectors.
