After 4 years of negotiations and successful completion of the strict Pest Risk Analysis conducted by the Kenya Plant Health Inspection Service (KEPHIS) and the National Plant Protection Organization of China, Kenya receives the green light to export fresh avocados to China.
It should be noted that previously, Kenya was able to supply China only with frozen avocados. In 2019, China had blocked fresh avocado due to the prevalence of fruit flies locally.
Now, to export fresh avocados to China, growers and exporters need to ensure that their production plants, packing houses and fumigation treatment facilities are registered by Kephis.
They must also implement Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), maintain adequate sanitary conditions and apply Integrated Pest Management programs (pest surveillance, chemical control, etc.).
Before exporting the fruit, exporters will also have to carry out fumigation treatment and inspect all their shipments.
