Heavy rains have impacted the agricultural sector in South Africa

Large parts of South Africa's most important agricultural provinces have been hit by heavy rains which have caused flooding and crop damage.
 
According to Bloomberg, citing data from the South African Meteorological Service, many districts in six of the country's nine provinces have seen unprecedented levels of rainfall. A district in Limpopo province received 390 millimeters of rain in December, four times the average recorded over the past 30 years. Other districts received more than double the average rainfall.
 
After the prolonged drought the country has experienced in recent years, the rains have been welcome. But it also caused various damage to crops and infrastructure.
 
Agri SA, the federation of agricultural organizations, says impact assessments are underway to determine the extent of the damage suffered by producers. “Reports have been received that some growers have 100% crop losses in some districts and as we are at the end of the planting season, growers cannot replant,” said Andrea Campher, Head of Planting. risks and disasters at Agri SA.
