Greenhouse production suspended due to high gas prices

Printable version
In Bulgaria the 30% increase in the price of gas has forced almost 70% of all greenhouses producing vegetables to stop production during the winter. Imports, especially of tomatoes and cucumbers, will increase.

BAPOP, the Bulgarian Association of Greenhouse Producers, told national radio that almost 70% of all greenhouses producing vegetables have stopped production during the winter. This is due to the recent increase (+30%) in the price of gas.

This increase in the price of gas is in addition to the increases in the price of electricity, fertilisers and chemical substances, which have been multiplied by 3. The sector's professionals are asking the government for aid to compensate for these increases and resume production.

This suspension of national production has led to a shortage of tomatoes and cucumbers on the domestic market. To meet the demand, the country will have to increase its imports from Greece, Turkey and Albania.
