Decline in value for Kenyan exports

The first half of 2021 was not a good one for Kenya's exports, which recorded a sharp decline in value. The reason, according to professionals, is the drop in product quality which has led to a drop in prices on the international market.
 
According to Directorate of Horticulture, between January and June 2021 Kenya's horticultural exports brought in 77 billion KES ($709.6 million) compared to 83.3 billion KES ($767.7 million) for the same period last year.
 
This is the biggest drop in revenues in the sector over the past 5 years. This drop can be explained by the drop in revenue generated by cut flowers and fruits.
 
With regard to fruits, according to professionals, the decline in product quality has led to lower prices on the international market. Particularly in the avocado sector where some traders exported unripe fruits, which had a negative impact on revenues despite the increase in exported volumes.
 
Regarding vegetables, the results for the first half of 2021 are positive with revenues of 15 billion KES ($138 million), an increase of 3 billion KES ($27 million) compared to the first half of 2020.
 
The European Union is still the No. 1 destination for Kenyan horticultural exports, with 45% of volumes.
