Decline in Senegalese mango exports

Printable version
In Senegal, the mango sector has just recorded one of its worst results for exports. The volume exported has fallen sharply and is 4,000 tonnes lower than the average recorded in recent years.

According to data cited by Commodafrica, Senegal exported 13,000 tonnes of mangoes for the 2020 season. A result well below forecasts and below the 17,000 tonnes, the average recorded in recent years.

Several factors explain this result. First, unfavorable weather conditions, such as cold weather which caused the fruits to drop prematurely during the peak of the season last July, then in August the excess rains which favored the development of pests. Then, the coronavirus pandemic had negative effects on the entire export chain, and in particular to several European countries.

In Senegal, the annual production of mangoes is between 120 and 150,000 tonnes. The exportable volume is estimated at around 25,000 tonnes but since 2018 exports have not increased, according to Fos (Foundation of Senegal origin / fruits and vegetables) and Adepme (Agency for the development and supervision of small and medium-sized enterprises).
