Expected decline of around 30% for citrus production

Printable version
Unfavorable weather conditions in the spring will cause a decline in citrus production in Syria. Estimates predict a decrease of around 30%

Citrus production in Syria is concentrated in the coastal provinces, the regions of Lattakia (75% of national production) and Tartous (25%). According to estimates from the Directorate of Agriculture for the Lattakia region, citrus production in the region will reach around 600,000 tonnes for the current season.

This decrease in production of around 30% compared to the previous season is due to the climatic conditions recorded in the region. In May, temperatures reached up to 40°C. A level about 15°C higher than the average, which caused many fruits to fall from the trees.

If the volume is less, the quality of the fruit is considered good. Marketing indicators for the domestic market as well as for export are positive.

Last year, citrus production in the Lattakia region totaled 900,000 tonnes.
