Export halt causes overabundance of tomatoes in Cameroon

Printable version
The health situation having led to the closure of the borders of several African countries, Cameroonian tomato producers were unable to export their crops.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Cameroonian tomato producers had as customers several neighboring countries and / or countries in the CEMAC zone (Economic Community of Central African States). Measures to fight the pandemic, including closing borders, are depriving Cameroonian producers of their markets. A loss estimated at 2/3 of the markets.

Cameroonian producers are forced to sell their tomatoes only on the domestic market. Supply is plentiful and prices have collapsed.

The situation is critical for the industry, which is hoping for a recovery plan from the government in the coming weeks.
