384 new agricultural irrigation projects launched in Tanzania

To overcome the difficulties of the agricultural sector which accounts for a third of the GDP of Tanzania, a vast construction plan of 384 new irrigation projects has been launched.
 
 
 
The National Irrigation Commission has announced that the construction of 384 new agricultural irrigation projects worth approximately $426 million has been launched. These new systems will be built in 8 regions (Dodoma, Kilimanjaro, Mbeya, Morogoro, Mtwara, Mwanza, Tabora, Katavi) over the next 5 years.
 
 
 
Recently heavy rains have affected the performance of the agricultural sector. This irrigation program aims to alleviate the difficulties of the sector which accounts for a third of the GDP of Tanzania. The investment will strengthen food security for the population, improve production volumes and increase farmers' incomes.
 
 
 
The Agricultural Sector Development Program aims to modernize the country's agriculture. With more training for farmers, with more incentive to use the latest technology and to follow the advice and information of TARI (Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute).
 
 
 
TARI scientists conduct research on a variety of crops, including corn, potatoes, avocado and beans.
