Export downturn due to shrinking demand

Printable version
Export downturn due to shrinking demand South African avocado exports to Europe are forecast to fall by around 2.5 million cartons (4kg). This decrease is attributable to the contraction in demand.

Estimates by the South African avocado industry indicate that exports will be lower than originally forecast. Volumes exported to Europe could reach just 16 million cartons (4kg) compared to 18.5 million expected at the start of the season.

This decline is due to the contraction in demand for green varieties in Europe. The sector aims to increase its volumes of the Hass variety, which is only the 2nd most cultivated variety currently in the country.

In South Africa, avocado crops cover 17,000 hectares. The country is the 2nd African exporter behind Kenya.
