Strong growth for the blueberry sector in South Africa

Printable version
Blueberry production increased by 6,300 tonnes compared to the previous year and is expected to increase by 7,000 tonnes next year.

For SABPA (South African Berry Producers Association) South African blueberry production increased from 11,700 tonnes last year to 18,000 tonnes for 2019/20.

This almost 54% increase in production reflects the increase in investment in the country and the high demand for blueberries. SABPA predicts that production could reach 25,000 tonnes for the 2020/21 season.

The agriculture and food supply sectors were considered essential services during containment to control COVID-19. This allowed the farmers to respect the calendar of the planting season.
