Local production is growing and demand is growing

Printable version
Qatar has set itself the goal of achieving self-sufficiency in vegetable production up to 70% by 2023. Agricultural projects and farms are growing, as well as initiatives to expand sales of local vegetables.

The marketing programs for local products are supervised by 2 ministries (Environment, Commerce) in supermarkets such as LuLu hypermarkets, FFC (Family Food Center), Al Meera and Carrefour.

The programs run, "Qatar Farms Program" and "Premium Qatar Farms Program", allowed the sale of 351 tons of local vegetables in July and nearly 150 tons in August. During the 2018-19 season, the marketed volume of local vegetables totaled 7,288 tonnes in the 5 existing markets which are open only in winter.

The government has decided to open two air-conditioned markets that will sell fresh vegetables grown locally and will remain open all year round.
