Opening new markets is key to planned expansion

South Africa is the third largest citrus exporter in the world after Spain and Turkey. Oranges constitute the bulk of exports. The planned expansion (+ 25%) by 2028 will only be possible with the opening of new markets.
 
 
 
According to data from the Bureau for Food and Agricultural Policy (BFAP), the citrus industry is flourishing and the country could, by 2028, export 25% more boxes than last year. But to support this growth, new markets must be found.
 
 
 
About 76% of South Africa's citrus fruits are exported, 32% to the EU and 10% to the UK. But the dependence on these markets makes South Africa vulnerable because the population of these two markets stagnates and leads to a demand for low growth.
 
 
 
New markets need to be found where demand and purchasing power are increasing in order to support the growth of production and exports over the next 10 years, BFAP emphasized.
