Prohibition of exporting onions and potatoes

Printable version
In order to stem domestic price increases, a ministerial decision will ban the export of potatoes and onions from April 4 onwards.

In Iran the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Trade announced the ban on exporting onions and potatoes. This ban will come into effect on April 4.

In the country the prices of onions and potatoes reach unusual levels. In a few weeks onion prices have gone up by 500% and potato prices by 200%.

This rise in prices results from the loss of value of the Iranian currency against the dollar, which has created an imbalance between national prices and prices in neighboring countries. The export of certain food products allows profits to be much higher than sales on the domestic market.

In addition, recent floods have hit several producing regions (Khuzestan, Kerman), which will lead to a reduction in available volumes.
