Avocado production can further strengthen in Kenya

Printable version

Kenya's climate zone provides ideal conditions for avocado production, also providing a unique export window since Kenyan avocados can arrive on the market (March-September) while other productions are out of season.

Worldwide, avocado production is around 3 million tonnes. Kenya is ranked 6th producer after Mexico, Chile, South Africa, Israel and Spain but exports only about 10,000 tonnes.

The steady rise in demand for avocados worldwide is an opportunity for Kenyan agriculture. To strengthen the production of avocados in the country, we must help small farmers. Last month, a horticulture and consulting company launched a small farmer program to train them in agronomic best practices, pest and disease management, post-harvest processing and global market standards.
