Kenya stays among Top Avocado exporters in the world.
Some years back, most of the avocados were sold in local markets, but today three-quarters of the avocado fruit grown is exported to other countries.
Kenya is the second largest African exporter of avocado after South Africa. Kenya’s main competitors on the European market are South Africa, Israel, and Spain. France is the main avocado importer, which takes 39 % of total imported volume, U.S.A (10%), U.K (6.5 %), Belgium (6.5 %), and the rest of the world (38%). Japan is the main importer in Asia.
One of the biggest exporter of avocado from Kenya - Keitt Exporers Limited is the leading company that export to markets in Europe and the Middle East for over a decade now.
Mr. Asif Amin (Managing director of Keitt Exporers ) introduces its company: « Keitt exporters Ltd is self-sufficient in handling every trading activity as have its own in-house consignment handling systems, ranging from packaging, transportation, warehousing, documentation to forwarding and shipping etc. We have a wide network of distributors and marketing professionals across the globe».
«In addition to our own farms, Keitt Exporters Limited has a net of affiliated independent farmers» - he continued.
This year company was presented its main product on Macfrut in Italy.
Mrs. Anne Kavai (Sales and marketing manager of the company) explained:
«The name "avocado" also refers to the fruit of the tree with an egg-shaped pit. The tree grows to 20 metres, with alternately arranged, leaves, 12–25 centimeters long. An average avocado tree produces over 500 avocados annually».
«Commercial orchards produce an average of 7 tonnes per hectare each year, with some orchards achieving 20 tonnes per hectare – continued Mrs. Kavai. «The avocado tree does not tolerate freezing temperatures and can be grown only in subtropical or tropical climates.
Set on equator, Kenyan avocado production lasts for longer seasons and enjoys ideal conditions for natural ripening of this tropical fruit. Moreover, since the farms are situated in Mt Kenya region with high altitudes, the crop protection requires little, thus making it purely organic. The two most known types of avocado that are grown here are Hass lasting from June to September and Fuerte, harvested from March to April».
