Spaniards' fruit consumption continues to decline, excepting for three fruits

From September 2022 to August 2023, each Spaniard has eliminated approximately 2.4 kilograms of fruits and vegetables from their shopping basket, according to the report "Food month by month, August 2023" elaborated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA). Per capita consumption has remained at an average of 127.46 kilograms in the analyzed period, which represents a reduction of 28 kilograms compared to 2021.

 

 

From September 2022 to August 2023, Spanish households have reduced the purchase of fresh fruits by 5.5% and fresh vegetables by 4.9%.

 

When it comes to fruit consumption, most varieties have seen a decline, except for bananas, which have increased by 3.2%, while apricots increased of 21.2%, and plums by 14.5%. On the other hand, the consumption of oranges declined by 14.6% and of watermelons by 8.2%.

 

In the case of fresh vegetables, the six products analyzed by the Ministry of Agriculture have registered decreases, with green beans leading the ranking (-9.9%), followed by peppers (-7.2%).
