International quality standards compliance, transparency and gender equality in banana farming

Printable version

Jasafrut SA is a banana farm in El Guabo, Ecuador, focusing on sourcing bananas for overseas supermarket chains in Europe for more than four decades. Certified with international standards such as GlobalG.A.P., Tesco Nurture protocols, Ethical and Social standards, and Rain Forest Alliance, it aims to consistently produce top-tier products that adhere to global requirements.

To ensure transparency in its supply chain and prevent illicit activities, including drug trafficking, corruption, and terrorism, Jasafrut has implemented the International BASC Security standards and remains committed to continuous improvement.

Women's rights in banana farming in Ecuador, as in many other agricultural sectors worldwide, have been a subject of concern and advocacy. While women play a significant role in banana production and the supply chain, they often face challenges related to gender inequality and labor rights.

According to Julissa Ivone Guazha Gonzalez, Jasafruit Payment Manager, women make up a substantial portion of the workforce in banana farming, especially in packing, quality control, and administrative roles, and women are often underrepresented in leadership and decision-making roles.

However, Jasafrut proves the opposite by providing equal terms for similar work for both genders, enabling access to education and training programs related to banana farming. At the same time, the company carries out educational activities with male employees to create a respectful work environment for women.

Ms. Gonzalez highlights that it is not a rare thing anymore, when women occupy higher positions than men in the fruit business, however, efforts should be made to ensure that all women in Ecuador have equal opportunities for skill development and training, and Jasafrut stands at the front row of these changes.
