Printable version
In the United States, where growing conditions vary from region to region, pumpkins are grown in many states, but only 6 states account for more than half of total national production.

According to USDA Economic Research Service data, in 2022, the 6 main pumpkin-growing states recorded a crop that exceeded 1 billion lb (453,592,370 kg):
.Illinois: production of 634 million lb (287,577,562 kg)
Indiana: production of 161 million lb (73,028,371 kg)
California: production of 122 million lb (55,338,269 kg)
Michigan: production of 90 million lb (40,823,313 kg)
Pennsylvania: production of 90 million lb (40,823,313 kg)
Virginia: production of 55 million lb (24,947,580 kg).

The total value of pumpkin production in the 6 main producing states is estimated at 134 million USD for 2022. In terms of production value, these 6 producing states rank differently:
.Indiana: 30 million USD
California: 29 million USD
Pennsylvania: $25 million
Illinois: $22 million
Michigan: $16 million
Virginia: 12 million USD.

Illinois has the largest pumpkin area of the 6 producing states, but most of its production (80%) is destined for industrial use. In the other states, this share remains minimal (3% in Pennsylvania, and even less in California and Virginia), and production is mainly destined for the seasonal fresh market for ornamental purposes, with pumpkins of the lantern pumpkin type (Howden) or other varieties (White Howden, Fairytale, Heirloom) for which demand continues to grow.
