Early start of potato season in Castilla y León

Printable version

The potato harvesting season in Castilla y León is set to begin in the first week of July, which is 10 days earlier than usual, according to Eduardo Arroyo, president of the Association of Potato Producers of Castilla y León (Appacyl). The campaign will commence with the Colomba variety, planted on approximately 1,500 hectares.

A 7% increase in potato cultivation area in the region is projected compared to last year, when 16,600 hectares were planted. However, official data won't be available until the closure of the CAP aid call on June 30.

Sowing was carried out in favorable conditions, and the crop has experienced a good germination rate. Despite some frosts, the plants have recovered well. Recent rainfall has been beneficial, saving growers approximately 15 to 18 days of watering. Although excessive moisture can potentially harm fungi, the moderate temperatures have limited any significant damage, resulting in a generally healthy crop.

Currently, potato harvesting is concentrated in Cartagena and Seville, as not all areas in Andalusia have seen the expected yields due to the impact of rains. The prices for potatoes are exceptionally high, reaching 0.70 euros per kilogram, an unprecedented level.

The future price trend will depend on various factors, including the export demand for potatoes. Germany and France have shown significant interest in purchasing potatoes, which provides an opportunity for growers to benefit from the high demand and potentially lucrative market.
