Potatoes: Production in Pakistan increased by +35%

In Pakistan, despite floods that devastated crops in several regions last year, potato production increased by +35% in volume.
 
According to Potato Research Institute Sahiwal, potato production in Pakistan in FY2022 reached 7.937 million tonnes, up +35% from 5.873 million tonnes in FY2021.
 
Last year's floods did not affect the Punjab region, which is the major region for production. In addition, Pakistan benefits from 3 potato harvests per year: the 1st, called autumn harvest is sown in October and harvested in February, the 2nd from imported variety is harvested from January to April and the 3rd is cultivated from April to September.
 
Every year Pakistan imports 20,000 tonnes of seed potatoes and the Potato Research Institute Sahiwal develops local varieties (PRI, Sadaf, Sahiwal, Cosmo, Ijaz 22) whose yields prove to be excellent.
 
Pakistani potatoes are exported to CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) countries, Iraq, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Singapore and Malaysia.
