Objective 100,000 tons of hazelnuts in 2025

In the ranking of hazelnut producing and exporting countries, Turkey, Italy and Azerbaijan are ahead of Georgia. But Georgia plans to reach 100,000 tonnes of harvested hazelnuts in 2025.
 
The Georgian government plans to make the country the second largest producer of hazelnuts in the world after Turkey. Various plans and programs will make it possible to advance production, with in particular increased yields on farms and high quality varieties. According to Todua, the Georgian Association of Hazelnut Growers, the goal of harvesting 100,000 tonnes in 2025 is possible.
 
In Georgia hazelnuts are grown on a total area of 72,000 hectares, of which about 40,000 hectares are small orchards (0.5 to 1 hectare) with low yields (0.5 tons per 1 hectare). By increasing the average yield of these small orchards, the volume produced will increase as well as the volume exported.
 
Italian industrialist Ferrero has increased its volume of purchases of Georgian hazelnuts, which confirms that the volume of high quality hazelnuts has also increased.
