Avocado is Tanzania's new 'green gold'

Less than 10 years ago, Tanzania did not export avocados. Now exports generate revenues of around $12 million.
 
 
 
According to Taha (Tanzania Horticultural Association) in its study called Avocado Catalog 2020, more than 10,000 farmers in the country are involved in the production of avocados. Tanzania is today the 2nd producer of avocados in Africa after Kenya.
 
 
 
Avocado exports increased from 1,877 tonnes in 2014 to 9,000 tonnes in 2019, an increase of 380% in 5 years.
 
 
 
The revenues generated by these exports increased from 0 to around 27.6 billion TZS ($12 million). The EU market represented 85% of Tanzanian avocado exports in 2018. France imported 3,133 tonnes, the Netherlands 2,304 tonnes and the United Kingdom 1,193 tonnes.
