Few companies meet China's requirements for the export of avocados

Printable version
Kenya and China reached an agreement last April to export avocados. But 6 months after this agreement, few Kenyan companies have managed to meet Chinese requirements and the expected jump for exports has not occurred.

China has asked that Kenyan farmers and traders freeze fruits at -30 ° C after peeling and keeping them at -18 ° C during transit, which means that investments in cold rooms are essential.

According to industry professionals, only 1 in 100 companies can meet these requirements. Without proper installation, smallholders can not access this profitable market. At the local level, companies have been working to put in place the infrastructure and systems needed to meet Chinese requirements, but the path is still long.
