Benin bets on mango

Printable version
Compared to neighboring countries, the volume of mangoes produced in Benin is low. But the authorities plan to increase national production to 22,000 tons per year and to increase exports.

To achieve this, a campaign to plant mango trees of the Kent and Amélie varieties was launched last week. The purchase of seedlings is subsidized by the government, which covers 80% of the cost price of a grafted mango tree for this 2022-2023 campaign. In addition, thanks to the National Program for the Development of the Fruit Arboriculture Sector, technical assistance will be provided to producers.

'These various actions will enable us by 2026 to increase mango production from 16,610 tonnes per year to 22,160 tonnes, of which at least 8% will be transformed into various derivatives and 25% exported to the international market" underlined Sylvestre Fandohan, Technical Advisor for Research, Agriculture and Food to the Minister of Agriculture.
