Smooth transition to AI-powered quality control software: Elad Mardix and Eduardo Mazzini share experience on their collaboration

Printable version

The Migiva Group is a vertically integrated farming and marketing business, with its own grower-exporter, sales and marketing operations, Joy Produce.

Recently, Clarifruit carried out a successful commercial implementation of its AI-driven quality control software for the fresh produce industry in all Migiva Group’s global operations.

In order to obtain a first-hand impression on this collaboration, the Fructidor team communicated with Elad Mardix, CEO and Co-Founder at Clarifruit, and Eduardo Mazzini, Director of Marketing and Business Development for the Migiva Group.

Fructidor: Mr. Mardix, how did Clarifruit and Migiva meet each other?

Elad Mardix: We met at the Fruit Logistica conference two years ago and found out that our long-term vision with respect to how quality should be evaluated and decisions need to be made in the fresh produce supply chain is aligned. We started to cooperate in late 2020 and since then have successfully deployed our software within all of Migiva’s fresh produce operations globally.

Fructidor: What was the biggest challenge in your project with Migiva?

Elad Mardix: Surprisingly, the training of machine learning to automatically identify external attributes of the produce categories has been relatively flawless. Deploying the QC platform across Migiva’s hundreds of inspectors, ensuring consistent usage of the mobile app among them, and addressing their incremental needs have represented the key areas of focus for our team but having a local customer success team on the ground ensured a successful commercialization process. Our collaboration has been focused thus far on deploying our Level-1 and Level-2 automation solutions, which includes the ability to automatically analyze external attributes through our computer-vision technology. We intend to deepen our AI capabilities towards Level-3 automation, which includes automatic identification of defects, over the next 12 months, and collaboration with Migiva will play an important role in that roadmap.

Fructidor: Mr. Mazzini, why did Migiva choose Clarifruit for this project?

Eduardo Mazzini: After carrying out the research on the next generation quality control technologies, we figured out that Clarifruit was the organization with the clearest view on what was needed in the industry, plus the knowledge on how to develop and interact with AI.

Fructidor: Was it difficult to switch to the AI-powered Quality Control software?

Eduardo Mazzini: All changes are difficult when people are involved but once the team understands the benefits and starts trusting the tool, then it gets easier. The team always needs to understand the long-term value proposition of the new tools, realize immediate benefits from the adoption, and most importantly, enjoy an easy-to-use and intuitive tool.

Fructidor: How did personnel react? How long did it take to get used to it?

Eduardo Mazzini: The whole team has always been very enthusiastic about technology and innovation, so it was not so hard to get them all onboard. However, there is always the challenge of fully understanding all capabilities of the new tech platform.

Fructidor: What is your opinion on the after-sale service provided by Clarifruit?

Eduardo Mazzini: Clarifruit is client oriented, and they focus and adjust fast according to the client needs and suggestions. Having their local support team on the ground in Latin America has been hugely important in successfully deploying Clarifruit among our hundreds of inspectors.
