Measures to prevent Fusarium Race 4 Tropical spread

The National Agrarian Health Service of Peru (Senasa) implements phytosanitary measures to control Fusarium Race 4 Tropical (FocR4T), a disease that threatens banana and plantain crops. These actions occur in the provinces of Sullana and Paita, located in the Piura region, which are recognized as the largest producers of this fruit.

Upon the initial detection of the disease, the agricultural health authority swiftly set in motion the necessary phytosanitary measures to prevent the spread of the FocR4T fungus to other regions in the country.

One of the primary strategies employed involves the establishment of quarantine checkpoints and inspection points. These checkpoints have successfully scrutinized over 50,000 vehicles per month, effectively impeding the transportation of banana plant material to other areas.

In addition to these measures, the checkpoints also conduct phytosanitary treatments, including vehicle disinfection.

On the field level, more than 75,000 hectares of banana and plantain cultivation have been closely monitored this year.

To further bolster prevention efforts, especially in light of the potential impact of the global El Niño phenomenon, banana and plantain producers are strongly encouraged to source plant material from certified locations, secure their parcels, establish a single entry point for both people and vehicles, disinfect tools, clothing, and footwear when entering and exiting the field, and provide regular training to their staff on the necessary biosecurity measures to safeguard against the incursion of FocR4T into their crops.
