In order to combat soaring prices on the domestic market, the Egyptian government has decided to temporarily ban onion exports.
Local media are reporting that the Egyptian government has decided to ban onion exports for 3 months from 1 October 2023.
In Egypt, onion prices have soared to EGP 35 (USD 1.13) per kilo on some local markets, a sharp increase on the EGP 27 (USD 0.87) of the previous month and the EGP 12 (USD 0.39) a year ago.
Egypt's onion crop totals 3 million tonnes a year, much of which is exported.
