Spaniards continue to consume less fruit and vegetables in households

In Spain, household consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables has fallen by 4% during the first 4 months of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA). Vegetables have registered a 5% decline, while fruit consumption decreased by 3%.
 
In contrast, the total value of consumption grew by 7%, reaching 4,417 million euros. Of this figure, 2,327 million euros corresponds to fruit (+6%), 1,791 million euros to vegetables (+9%) and 300 million euros to potatoes (+12%).
 
In detail, household consumption of vegetables during the first four months of the year stood at 756 million kilos, which represents a 5% decrease compared to the same period in 2022. There has been a 4% drop in the consumption of tomatoes, totalling 143 million kilos; an 8% decrease in the case of peppers, with a total of 58 million kilos; and a 3.7% reduction in the case of lettuces, reaching 52 million kilos. On the other hand, onion consumption has increased by 6%, reaching 93 million kilos.
 
Consumption of fresh potatoes in households has also decreased by 4%, reaching 280 million kilos, according to MAPA data.

In relation to fresh fruit, household demand during the first four months of 2023 has reached 1,140 million kilos, representing a 3% decrease compared to the same period in 2022. There has been a 7.5% decrease in the consumption of oranges, reaching 284 million kilos; a 2.6% decrease in the case of apples, with a total of 148 million kilos; a 2% decrease in the case of pears, with a total of 68 million kilos; and a 5% decrease in the consumption of strawberries, with a total of 73 million kilos consumed in households.
