Lemon production deficit in northern Peru

According to Juan Arica Lavalle, the president of the Sagrado Corazón lemon producers' committee in Tumbes, the lemon situation is worrying because there is a very low production in northern Peru.

The fruit has not flowered as it should and the minimum is being extracted. He specified that in Tumbes, productivity has gone from up to 20 meshes of lemons per hectare cultivated to half a mesh today.

However, it is projected that the situation will improve by the end of the year, from November or December onwards, due to the fact that the currently high prices will regularise.

It is not only the El Niño Coastal phenomenon that is causing a decline in lemon production. Climate change, flooding, inadequate fertilisation are also affecting it. The fields are filling up with water, this water is heating up, having a negative impact on the productivity of the plants.
