A strategic merger in Australia, with the onion sector represented by Onions Australia joining AUSVEG, the national body representing the interests of Australian vegetable and potato growers. 

 

Onions Australia is joining AUSVEG, following a consultation and vote by Onions Australia members. According to Bill Bulmer, Chairman of AUSVEG, the merger marks a new era of growth and opportunity for the Australian onion industry.

 

AUSVEG is the national body representing the interests of Australia's vegetable and potato growers, who grow more than 3.7 million tonnes of produce with a farm gate value of more than AUD 5.5 billion (USD 3.7 billion).

 

Onions are the country's 4th largest vegetable crop, accounting for 9% of total vegetable production. In 2015 Australia produced 231,484 tonnes of onions for a total production value of AUD 135.5 million (USD 92.1 million) and exported 39,420 tonnes of fresh onions.
