Peru prompts pitahaya cultivation, inspired by Ecuador's success

In order to diversify the Peruvian agro-export basket, several investment groups and companies have focused on cultivating pitahaya, with very positive future projections, aiming to replicate the successful path that Ecuador has taken with the dragon fruit. However, businesses must be cautious not to repeate the same commercial mistakes made with other crops.

Giovanny Decker, a commercial advisor from Ecuador, says that Ecuador indeed leads the South American pitahaya exports and has already surpassed 29,898 tons between January and May 2023, indicating continuous growth.

The advisor says it is crucial to consider the markets and the price fluctuations caused by oversupply. Diversifying markets and promoting the fruit is key.

To progress in this direction, Decker emphasizes the importance of strengthening the training and technical assistance for Peruvian producers, enabling them to thoroughly understand the value chain of this fruit, with clear objectives.

From the investors' perspective, this type of production should align with trends in corporate social responsibility and due diligence in the supply chain, benefiting everyone from the producer to the final consumer, according to Decker.
