11% drop in Colombian banana exports until May

From January to May 2023, Colombia has exported a total of 701,430 tons of bananas, indicating an 11% reduction compared to the same period in 2022.

Based on data provided by the Association of Banana Growers of Magdalena and La Guajira (Asbama), in the said period, 50% of the total national exports of banana originated from the Colombian Caribbean region: Magdalena, Cesar, and La Guajira.

Banana exports from the said area in the first 5 months of 2023 amounted to 351,635 tons, representing a 6% decrease compared to the same period in 2022.

This decline can be attributed to various factors associated with plantation renewal processes, including floods and storms that occurred in late 2022 and early 2023.
