Green light to Italian pears in China

Official negotiations for accessing the Chinese market with Italian pears began in 2017 but were interrupted during the pandemic. Finally, on June 26, 2023, the parties signed a protocol at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Forests in Italy during a visit to Rome by Yu Jianhua, the head of China's General Administration of Customs, according to Italian media.

From the Italian pear sector, they anticipate that the initial batch of fruit could arrive in China at the end of this year.

Italy is the largest pear producer in the European Union and the second-largest worldwide, surpassed only by China. Pear production in Italy is concentrated in the northern region of Emilia-Romagna, which accounts for over 70% of the total production. The most popular varieties include Abate Fetel, Carmen, Conference, Decana del Comizio, Kaiser, Max Red Bartlett, Santa Maria, and Williams.
