Spain loses global leadership in melon exports volume

According to Hortoinfo.es, which processed data from COMTRADE, the United Nations (United Nations) Statistics Division, in 2022 a total of 1.912 billion kilos of melons were exported worldwide.

Spain's melon exports dropped by 93.18 million kg (-21.63%), while Guatemala witnessed an increase of 70.92 million kg (+26.13%).

Volume

In total, 1,912.25 million kilos of melons were exported worldwide in 2022. Guatemala, Spain, and Brazil positioned themselves as the top three suppliers, accounting for almost half of the world's total melon exports, with a combined volume of 902.29 million kilos (47.18% of the world’s total).

Guatemala exported 342.35 million kilos of melons, Spain shipped 337.58 million kilos, and Brazil sent 222.36 million kilos. Other vital suppliers were Honduras, the United States, and the Netherlands, with some 179.59 million kg, 136.03 million kg, and 120.94 million kg, respectively.

Destinations

Guatemala primarily exported its melons to the United States, accounting for 95.68% of its total exports. Spain's largest buyer was France, receiving 86.15 million kilos, followed by Germany with 80.69 million kilos, the United Kingdom with 51.09 million kilos, the Netherlands with 42.57 million kilos, and Portugal with 27.15 million kilos. Brazil’s main recipients were the Netherlands (80.19 million kilos), the United Kingdom (60.54 million kilos), and Spain (55.76 million kilos).
