Spanish pip fruit exports on a downward trend

The pip fruit contact group of Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal recently met in Santarém, Portugal, to conduct an analysis of the data concerning the 2022/2023 campaign. 

During the meeting, the Regulation for the sustainable use of phytosanitary products proposed by the European Commission was addressed. This Regulation aims to achieve a 50% reduction in pesticide usage and a 20% reduction in fertilizer usage by the year 2030, however consequences on the community productive potential are still to be evaluated.

According to data from the Department of Customs and Excise, in 2022, Spain’s apple exports reached 106,109 tons, which is 4% lower compared to the previous year. These exports were valued at 90.8 million euros, indicating a slight decline of 1.3%. Pear exports in 2022 totaled 93,716 tons, declining 23% compared to 2021. The value of these exports amounted to 77 million euros, reflecting a decrease of 27%.

In terms of apple imports, the figures for 2022 showed an increase of 6% compared to 2021, with imports amounting to 195,524 tons. However, the value of these imports decreased by 4% and stood at 150 million euros. Pear imports, on the other hand, experienced a decline of 5% compared to 2021, with 63,341 tons imported in 2022. The value of these pear imports reached 57 million euros, representing an 11% decrease.
