New decline in Cameroonian banana exports

The year 2023 has not started in the most satisfactory way for the banana sector in Cameroon. The volume of bananas exported recorded a further decline in May.

According to data from Assobacam (Cameroon Banana Association) for the month of May 2023, the country exported 12,558 tons of bananas. That is -23.91% compared to the volume exported in May 2022.

Compared to the same months of 2022, exports in 2023 registered a variation of -2.08% in January, a variation of -2.06% in February, a variation of -14.94% in March and a variation of -23.67% in April.

The local media announce that Assobacam believes that these declines can be explained by lower production, following the increasingly pronounced dry seasons (January-March) due to climate change. As well as by the rise in the price of inputs which limits their use among farmers and leads to less abundant production.

Cameroon is the 2nd producing country in the countries of the ACP zone (Africa-Caribbean-Pacific), behind Côte d'Ivoire. Cameroon exports its bananas mainly to the European market.
