Peruvian pomegranate exports decline -12% until May

From January 1 to May 28, 2023, the export of fresh pomegranates from Peru amounted to 41,464,367 kilos, showing a contraction of -12% compared to the corresponding period in the previous year.

According to Fernando Cillóniz Benavides, the president of a consulting firm Inform@cción, the Peruvian pomegranate campaign extends from January to June. The supply from Arequipa begins in January and February, followed by fruit from Ica in the subsequent months.

During the analyzed period of this campaign, shipments unfolded as follows: In January, 859,245 kilos were exported (compared to 2,330,739 kilos in January 2022). In February, the figure stood at 5,151,675 kilos (versus 6,981,480 kilos in February 2022). March registered 15,392,165 kilos (16,505,424 kilos in March 2022). In April, the exports reached 14,317,747 kilos (14,253,949 kilos in April 2022). Finally, by May 28, 5,743,534 kilos had been exported (7,270,445 kilos in the entirety of May 2022).

Cillóniz highlighted that there were high expectations for the pomegranate campaign this year. However, the volume of fruit in the first two months was significantly low, with a recorded drop of approximately 40% in volume, although prices remained high. The increased supply from Ica helped mitigate the difference, but prices remained low.

According to the president of Inform@cción, the Peruvian pomegranate market is relatively small due to limitations on the export of fresh fruit to the United States and China. Additionally, one of the main destination markets, Russia, experienced a decrease in shipments due to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
